Between Culture, Relationships, and Breaking Stereotypes: My Journey as a Modern Woman

Hello, my beautiful readers! 馃専

Today, I want to dive into a topic that’s close to my heart: how culture and identity shape who we are, how these elements affect our relationships, and how gender stereotypes sneak into our lives. As always, I’ll be sharing my personal story—because, let’s be honest, life is the best storyteller.

Culture and Identity: The Foundation of My Strength

I was born in a small, close-knit town in Colombia, where family was everything. Growing up in a Catholic household with loving, supportive parents and a sister who is my lifelong partner-in-crime, I had the privilege of a childhood filled with traditions, laughter, and faith.

But as much as I cherish those roots, I knew early on that staying in my small town wasn’t my destiny. As the youngest daughter with big dreams in Electronic Engineering, I wanted to conquer challenges that my hometown simply couldn’t offer. Moving to a bigger city was terrifying yet liberating—it was where I truly discovered myself.

Living alone taught me independence in its rawest form. Paying my bills, fixing things around the house, and making career decisions without anyone else to rely on was empowering. But it also set me apart, especially in relationships. In a culture where women are often expected to marry young and have children, my path wasn’t exactly "traditional."

馃搼"The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud." – Coco Chanel

This quote perfectly encapsulates my journey. Deciding to leave my comfort zone and live life on my terms required courage—not just to make those choices but to stand by them, loudly and unapologetically.

Interpersonal Relationships: Love, Friendship, and Independence

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that relationships, of any kind, thrive when they are rooted in respect and authenticity. As a project manager in a multinational company, I work with people from all over the world. Each culture brings its unique perspective, and I’ve grown to love this diversity.

馃搼"The richest people in the world look for and build networks, everyone else looks for work." – Robert Kiyosaki
This resonates deeply with my professional journey. Building relationships—whether with colleagues, clients, or mentors—has not only enhanced my career but also enriched my personal growth. Networks are more than a collection of contacts; they’re a source of inspiration, collaboration, and opportunities.

But let’s talk about romantic relationships. Being a strong, independent woman can be intimidating for some men. I’ve dated wonderful people, but many struggled with the idea that I didn’t need them to "complete" my life. And that’s okay; I’ve learned that the right person will admire my independence instead of seeing it as a challenge.

On the other hand, my friendships have been my life's pillars. Whether it’s my high school friends (shoutout to my all-girls Catholic school crew!) or my colleagues at work, I’ve been blessed with people who support and celebrate me. We cook, dance, and travel together. They’re the family I’ve chosen in the distance, and they remind me every day that love comes in many forms.

Gender Stereotypes: Breaking Free

Let’s get real for a second—gender stereotypes are everywhere, even in 2024. Growing up, I was lucky to have a family that never pressured me to get married or have kids. They celebrated my achievements instead of measuring my worth by my marital status.

But society? Oh, that’s a different story. Colombia, like many places, has deeply rooted expectations for women. We’re supposed to be nurturing, docile, and dependent. I am none of those things—and embracing that without guilt has been a journey.

At work, I’ve sometimes faced the classic “you’re too direct” critique, which often feels like code for “you’re a woman with an opinion.” And in relationships, I’ve met men who preferred someone less self-sufficient. But here’s the thing: I’m proud of who I am. My independence doesn’t make me less feminine or less worthy of love; it makes me me.

A Life of My Own Making

Today, I live in my own apartment, drive my own car, and enjoy a career I love. I still visit my family every few months, and my mom remains one of my best friends. I go to church on Sundays, bake cookies for my friends, and organize BBQs because I love bringing people together.

I believe in love—not just romantic love, but the love that comes from meaningful relationships and living a life aligned with my values. As I’ve grown and embraced the person I’ve become, I’ve also sought out inspiration to keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible for me.

One of the books that has deeply resonated with me is “Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear” by Elizabeth Gilbert. While it’s primarily about creativity, the lessons on self-expression and overcoming societal pressures align so beautifully with the journey of embracing our true selves. It’s a reminder that living authentically isn’t just an act of rebellion; it’s an act of courage. 馃挏

I highly recommend this book for anyone navigating the complexities of culture, and relationships, and breaking free from stereotypes. It’s like a gentle nudge to keep exploring the magic within you.

A Final Thought: Your Story Matters

Your culture, relationships, and experiences make you who you are. They’re the threads that weave your unique identity. And while stereotypes may try to box you in, remember: you are so much more than any label.

Keep dreaming big, loving fully, and embracing every piece of who you are.

With love,
Maria Claudia
