interpersonal Relationships in the 21st Century
As we can realize, nowadays we are living in one of the most fascinating yet crazy eras in history, especially in everything related to how we connect with our relatives, colleagues, classmates, and the environment around us. Since technology started advancing rapidly in the last century, our lives and behaviors have changed a lot. Even though technology has provided us with several advantages, improving our possibilities and life quality, interpersonal relationships have also been affected by these changes. However, this doesn’t mean that the way we connect with people now is healthier than how it used to be. As humans, we are supposed to have the ability—and the need—to connect with our environment, so this is a skill that should be trained and practiced, not forgotten.
One big change I’ve noticed is how much time people spend on their phones, even when they’re surrounded by others. For example, it’s common to see a group of friends sitting together, but instead of talking to each other, they’re all looking at their screens. This makes me think that even though technology allows us to stay in touch with people who are far away, it might sometimes hurt the connections we have with those who are right next to us. Personally, I think this is one of the biggest challenges we face today.
On the other hand, technology also brings undeniable benefits. During the pandemic, for instance, video calls became a way for families to stay connected despite being apart. In my case, I couldn’t visit my grandparents for months, but being able to talk to them online made a big difference. Similarly, apps and social media make it easier to keep in touch with old friends or meet new ones. These are examples of how technology can actually strengthen relationships when used wisely.
Another thing to consider is how important it is to practice social skills in real-life situations. Talking face-to-face is very different from sending a text, and sometimes it feels like people are losing the ability to hold a natural conversation. In school, we’re taught a lot about academics, but I think there should also be more focus on teaching communication skills, like listening and expressing ideas clearly. These are things that help
us build better connections, not only in personal relationships but also in professional ones.
In conclusion, the 21st century has completely changed the way we interact with others. Technology has made it easier to communicate and stay connected, but it has also created challenges, especially in how we handle in-person interactions. To maintain healthy relationships, we need to use technology wisely and make an effort to connect meaningfully in real life. After all, strong relationships are built on understanding, trust, and time spent together, not just through messages or likes.
